This one is for the Volunteers and Spectators

It is amazing what people can accomplish when they set their minds to it. I have competed in several different races and events over the last few months and I am constantly leaving impressed by the goals that have been smashed and the times that have been achieved. It feels so good when hard work pays off and all those hours pounding the pavement and hitting the gym feel worth it.

But can we talk about the spectators and volunteers? Personal records are great, but they wouldn’t be possible without the people that make the event happen. Getting up early on race day can be tough sometimes, but imagine how much earlier volunteers get up to ensure everything is ready when you arrive. Or how long they stay after the event is over cleaning up.

Without volunteers pointing and shouting which direction to go a lot more people would get lost on the course. There would be no water stations or post-race refreshments. You can forget having a large window of time to pick up or packet or a place to drop your bag off. Events need participants to be successful and raise money, but they would not exist if it wasn’t for the numerous crucial volunteers.

To all the volunteers out there, thank you for all you do.

Let’s not forget about the spectators. Sometimes when you feel like you have nothing left, but you hear your mom, friend, sister or even a stranger cheering for you, you find a new gear inside you. Just knowing someone made the trip to watch you compete or took the time to read your bib to encourage you means the world to a competitor.

Spectators commit to spending hours of their time just to see seconds of a competition. They are often running around the course trying to get to the next spot in time to see a few more seconds of your race.

Spectators, please know that even when we have ugly race faces we really appreciate you being there on the sidelines.

To all the volunteers and spectators out there, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you do.
